Our Company

Ecodownunder is a family run Australian owned business since 1997.

We believe we all have a responsibility to look after the natural environment for future generations. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

Our products do not contain:

  • Harsh chemicals like cancer causing Azo dyes and formaldehyde coated sheets were common.
  • Synthetics like polyester or "micro fibre" (which are just plastic fibres), that break up into thousands of tiny pieces every wash cycle.
  • Single use plastic packaging that is thrown away as soon as you get home, or even worse, polystyrene and PVC!

We decided that we had to do better. "Reduce, recycle, reuse" and beach cleans were good but.....it was obvious to us then that any meaningful change had to come from businesses by eliminating the source of the problem.

The idea for ecodownunder was born way back then in 1997

At Ecodownunder we skip the middleman and work directly with our suppliers in both Australia and India.

We do not have expensive overheads and this enables us to sell our products at a fair price, so that everyone can afford sustainable organic and eco friendly natural alternatives.

Please compare our products with other Retailers and see the difference for yourself.

We try to have as many products as practical made in Australia, this includes:

  • All Quilts

  • Mattress Protectors

  • Pillows

  • Underlays/Toppers/Underblankets

  • Candles

  • Soap

Our Sheets, Towels, Quilt  Covers, Coverlets & Blankets are made in India from locally sourced fibres (excluding Linen which is European and Merino Wool from Australia).

Our Products

All Ecodownunder products are made from natural fibres, so it is important that you follow the Care Instructions provided on each product.

We have provided some tips to help prolong the life of your eco products.

Pre-Wash Sorting

Proper sorting of your washing is essential, washing like colours and fabrics together is key.

  • Wash your towels separately.
  • Never overload your washing machine.
  • Never leave washing powder or detergent sitting on top of the washing as this may cause spotting on the fabric (caused from the powder).
  • Always use a gentle eco friendly washing power/detergent
  • For the pre treatment of stains we recommend you use “Tuff Stuff” which is a vegan, natural cleaning soap. Tuff Stuff includes Lemon Eucalyptus an essential oil that helps lift stubborn stains from most textiles. You can spot clean small or large areas. This is a ready to use netted soap and feedback from customers is that it has lifted dirt, grease, oil, grass stains, red wine, blood and even ink.

Fabric Softener not recommended

We do not recommend the use of Fabric Softeners as this puts a film on the products and make them less absorbent.

Most new towels will shed a little excess lint at first. A few initial washes will eliminate this problem and leave your towels ready for use.

If you cannot line dry your towels, do not use a hot setting on you dryer as this will overheat the cotton fibres and cause them to break down, creating excess linting. Instead use a warm dryer.

Yes we sell Organic Cotton Towels and have a few ranges to choose from, depending what suits you.

We sell both Plush and Ribbed Organic Cotton Towels.  To review our range, click on this link Luxury Organic Cotton Towels

Our Best selling sheets are our Signature Eco Cotton Sheets

The most comfortable sheets are those that are made from 100% natural fibres.

Choosing the best bed sheets is a matter of personal preference and depends upon how you like your sheets to feel against your skin.

We have developed an extensive range of bed sheets to ensure we have sheets you will love to sleep in, this includes Organic Cotton,  Linen, Hemp, Cashmere, 1000 thread count, Egytpian Cotton, Linen/Cotton Blend and Sateen Stripe.  Click on this link to review Ecodownunder Sheets

Sheets are generally sold in sheet sets in all sizes including super king and king single sheets. Linen sheets are available as individual fitted and flat sheets. This allows the opportunity to use your creative flare to style your own combination, by mixing and matching colours which are designed to complement one another.

Ecodownunder White Eco Cotton Sheets are available to purchase as individual Fitted Sheets or Flat Sheets that include king single, long single bedding, super king fitted sheets and in queen and king size fitted sheets. We offer a choice of a 37cm wall or for those who have a deeper mattress, a 50 cm wall.

Thread Count refers to the number of actual threads per square inch of fabric. This is calculated by counting the number of horizontal threads and the number of vertical threads which make up the weave of the fabric.

However, the best way to determine if the sheets are right for you is to feel them, rather than depending on thread count.

Yes, we sell Queen and King deep wall sheets.

Queen Deep Wall - has a 50cm depth or wall and is suited to a deep Queen mattress (40-50cm)

King Deep Wall - has a 50cm depth or wall and is suited to a deep King mattress (40-50cm)

Discoloured patches are caused by bleaching/whitening products.

Many products contain agents and chemicals that can take the colour out of natural fibres, leaving discoloured patches or spots on sheets or towels. In some cases the patches do not appear until after washing.

The colour of the patches may vary depending on the colour of the product (i.e. white patches will appear on blue towels, yellow/orange patches will appear on grey towels - see examples below).

Some of the culprits that cause these discoloured patches include:

  • Makeup - don't forget to remove your makeup before going to bed. Some cosmetics contain active ingredients that can discolour your sheets and pillowcases permanently.
  • Hair dye and some hair products can also leave discoloured patches, these show up, particularly, on pillowcases. So Before you go to bed your hair is dry.
  • Facial cleansers and creams that haven't been thoroughly washed off your hands before grabbing the towel can leave marks.
  • Acne creams or ointments that contain benzoyl peroxide and similar prescription products can cause staining.
  • Whitening toothpaste and mouth wash - these products can easily be transferred to your towels and they may not appear immediately.

Bleach marks appear white on blue coloured towels :

We DO NOT recommend using any fabric softeners on your towels.

Fabric softeners leave a coating on towels, which reduces its absorbency.

We suggest that instead of using fabric softener, you can halve the washing powder/detergent and add two tablespoons of white wine vinegar to the wash.

At times snags or pulls appear on towels.  A snag is caused by a sharp object. To fix this, you can use a sharp pair of scissors to snip the snag to the level of pile. This will not impact on the use of the towel, nor will it unravel.

Yes they are cotton seeds. As we use only natural cotton fill in our mattress protectors, from time to time, small cotton seeds may be caught in the cotton fibre and become visible when washed.

These are all natural and do not effect the use of the mattress protector.

We do not use blankets or TOG ratings to determine how warm a quilt is. There are many variables and the blankets can be made from cotton, wool, polyester etc.. and all have different weights and warmth ratings.

This is because the warmth of a quilt will depend on:

  • how warm your house/room is

  • how hot/cold do you get

  • do you have aircon in your house/room

  • does your bedroom face north or south

Our quits are designed in Australia for our seasons.

  • If you live in a cold climate in southern parts of Australia, then you should consider an all seasons or winter quilt.

  • If you live in a warm climate in northern parts of Australia, then you should consider a lighter summer or all seasons quilt.

Toitū enviromark gold is the second step in the Environmental Management System journey in New Zealand. An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a planned approach to managing environmental impacts. The "Toitū enviromark" programme mentors organisations to develop, implement and maintain an EMS and verifies their work.

In short the answer is no unless you want to risk damaging your product as the agitation on the washing machine can still cause natural fibres to interlock.

The Japara Cotton used does NOT contain any wax - bees wax or paraffin wax.

Our Makers use a tightly woven weave that is pure cotton to ensure that no cotton or wool leaches from the quilt. This is still referred to as Japara Cotton.

Ecodownunder down and feather bedding is ethically sourced and is made from a by product of the Australian food industry.  No farms raise birds purely for their feathers.  The down and feather would become a waste material if not used for bedding and clothing.  By using a waste product from the food industry,  it avoids the manufacture of synthetic materials which have a higher carbon footprint.

Yes, all the wool that is used in the making of our quilts ‘mulesing free’.

Sleep is incredibly important, and you need a quality quilt that is comfortable and warm and made from natural fibres …. Mother Nature is hard to beat.

Quilts made from all natural fibres are durable and last longer than those with synthetic fillings. They excel in keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer, with the natural fibres helping your skin to breathe as you sleep.

Some factors to consider when purchasing a quilt:

  • What size do I need? Most customer will size up for example, purchase
a Double Quilt for a King Single Bed, or a King Quilt for a Queen Bed.

  • Do you use an air conditioner in your bedroom during winter or summer? Is your bedroom naturally warm or
    cold?
Do you get hot during the night or cold?
  • Do I like a light weight quilt or one
    with a bit more weight?

  • Lastly budget – while all our quilts are great value, they do vary in price.

Which Quilts are the warmest?

  • Hungarian Goose Down quilts are considered the warmest and best natural
    insulators.

Which Quilts are the coolest?

  • Summer Cotton quilts are considered the coolest for summer.

The wool we use in our Australian made quilts is a “downs” type of wool, from Poll Dorset sheep, renowned for its density and springiness.  It’s grown in Australia and prepared using processes that are approved by Oeko-Tex Standard 100.  This means we are assured that our wool quilts do not contain allergenic or carcinogenic dye, have been tested for and are free of pesticides, chlorinated phenols and formaldehydes.  The certification applies to the finished product which includes the  cotton fabric covering the wool.

After the fleece has been sheared from the sheep, it needs to be thoroughly cleaned before it can be used to make bedding.  This process is called scouring and removes the impurities, the minerals, some of the grease and the organic matter from the wool. The fleece goes through 3-4 washes but harmful chemicals are not used allowing the wool quilts to be certified by Oeko-Tex Standard 100.  After the scouring, the wool is then returned to the factory where it is sent through the wool opener and hopper machines, where the wool fibres are opened up and aired, and then layered to create thickness and loft.

We recommend you air your quilt regularly and do not recommend machine washing.  Spot clean marks with an ecofriendly stain remover such as Tuffy Natural Stain Remover.

We recommend you air your quilt regularly and follow the care instructions on the quilt as we offer both Machine Washable Wool Quilts and non Machine Washable Wool Quilts.  You can also spot clean marks with an ecofriendly stain remover such as Tuffy Natural Stain Remover.

Yes we do sell Hungarian Goose Down Quilts.

We have available:

The super soft and fine Hungarian Goose Down imported from Hungary (the Worlds premium suppliers) and made up into quilts in Australia.

Hungarian goose down is considered the best quality down and provides great insulation, and is lightweight and comfortable.

Linen is a textile created from the flax plant which is an extremely durable plant used for many products because it can handle a lot of wear and tear.

Linen can be washed and worn and washed again and again. With each wash linen will become softer and more comfortable.

Sometimes you do not want to wait for your linen to soften, so there are few things that you can do to speed up this process.

Do not use any fabric softeners, these may prevent the linen from softening on its own. Use Baking Soda - when it comes to making linen feel softer, baking soda has been successful. It has a pH of 9 that helps regulate the pH balance of water, in turn helping to make natural fabrics feel softer.

  1. Add half a cup of baking soda to your wash (this works on many natural fabrics) or;

  2. Add a cup of baking soda to a bucket of water and mix until it is dissolved, than add your linen sheets or quilt cover and soak from an hour to overnight then rinse and dry in the shade or;

  3. Add an eco wash ball to the machine when washing linen.  Eco balls raise the pH of the water, softening it and opening the fabrics weave.

Yes, we recommend that you alway give a duck down quilt a good airing prior to use. Sometimes there may be slight, natural feather smell, that will dissipate when aired.

Wool has the highest natural fire resistance of any fibre and therefore is less likely to ignite.  If the wool fibre does burn, it does not melt or drip and can self-extinguish.

We do not add any fire retardants to our wool products.

The wool is sourced in Australia from ethical farms with the best animal husbandry practices in place.

All the wool that is used in the making of our wool quilts is ‘mulesing free’, and the sheep are only shorn once per year.
