Caring for your Duck Down Pillow
Airing:
- New Pillow: When buying a new duck down pillow, it’s important to air it out before use to remove any natural duck scents. The down may retain some of the natural feather/down scents. Simply place the pillow in a well-ventilated area, and the scents will dissipate after a day or 2 of airing out.
- Regular Airing: To keep your duck down pillow fresh, air it out regularly. Every few weeks, remove the pillow from its pillowcase and place it in a well-ventilated area. Allow it to breathe for a few hours to prevent moisture buildup and keep the down filling fluffy.
- Fluffing: Gently fluff the pillow to restore its loft. This helps the down filling maintain its shape and keeps it from becoming flat or lumpy.
Cleaning:
- Check the Label: Always check the care label on your pillow for specific instructions.
- Hand Washing: Gently hand wash the pillow. Fill a bathtub or large basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild, eco-friendly detergent. Submerge the pillow and gently agitate it with your hands. Rinse thoroughly with clean, cool water until no detergent remains.
- Drying:
- Air Dry: If you prefer to air dry, lay the pillow flat on a clean surface, fluffing it occasionally to prevent clumping. It may take longer to dry this way, so be patient.
- Tumble Dry on Low Heat to Finish: You can finish off the drying process in your tumble dryer on a low heat setting. Add a couple of clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help break up clumps of down and ensure it dries evenly.
- Ensure Complete Drying: It’s essential that the pillow is fully dried before using it again. Damp down can lead to mould or mildew, so make sure there’s no moisture left inside before using or storing the pillow.
- DO NOT DRY CLEAN as the chemicals used may damage the duck down & feathers.
By following these gentle care instructions, your duck down pillow will stay fresh, fluffy, and comfortable for years to come!
