Yet we rarely stop to ask what those fabrics are actually made from.
Natural fibres such as cotton, linen and wool come from plants and animals. Synthetic fibres such as polyester, nylon and acrylic are forms of plastic, generally made from fossil-fuel-derived materials.
For Ecodownunder, choosing natural fibres is one of the simplest principles behind Living with Nature.
Natural fibres can feel comfortable and breathable, reduce our reliance on synthetic materials and avoid adding another unnecessary source of plastic fibres to the home.
We think the first question to ask when choosing a textile should be simple:

The difference begins with where the fibre comes from.
Natural fibres occur in nature and come from plants or animals.

Synthetic fibres are manufactured polymers. Common examples include:
Polyester
Nylon
Acrylic
Polypropylene
Polyester is essentially a form of plastic. Most conventional polyester is made from PET — polyethylene terephthalate — a polymer commonly produced from fossil-fuel-derived raw materials.
That doesn't mean every natural fibre product is automatically sustainable, or that a synthetic fibre can never have a useful purpose.
It does mean the fibre itself is an important place to start.
For bedding especially, comfort matters.
Cotton, linen and wool have been used for generations because their fibre properties make them particularly suited to products that sit close to the body.
Different natural fibres behave differently.
Cotton feels soft and familiar and readily absorbs moisture.
Linen is valued for its cool, relaxed feel and becomes softer with use.
Wool can absorb water vapour and provides excellent insulation, making it particularly useful for quilts, blankets and mattress layers.
Rather than trying to create comfort through synthetic coatings or chemical finishes, good natural-fibre products can rely on the inherent properties of the fibre itself.
A comfortable sleeping environment depends on more than whether a sheet simply feels soft in the shop.
Heat and moisture also need somewhere to go.
Natural fibres such as cotton, linen and wool can absorb and release moisture, helping create a comfortable microclimate around the body.

We think choosing the materials closest to you deserves a little thought.
Polyester, acrylic, nylon and many other synthetic textile fibres are polymers.
In simple terms:
Polyester has many practical uses. It can be inexpensive, strong, wrinkle resistant and easy to manufacture.
But it also means that a product which looks and feels like fabric may ultimately be another plastic product brought into the home.
Synthetic fibres are now extremely common in household textiles — including bedding, mattress protectors, quilts, cushions, rugs and upholstery.
Choosing natural fibres is one practical way to reduce the amount of synthetic material around you.
Synthetic textiles can shed tiny plastic fibres during manufacturing, use, washing and disposal.
These fibres are usually described as microplastics or microplastic fibres.
This isn't limited to clothing.
Synthetic fibres are widely used throughout household textiles, including bedding and furnishings.
Natural fibres can shed fibres too, but there is an important difference:
That distinction matters when thinking about the materials we continually manufacture, wash, wear and eventually dispose of.
The environmental effects of microplastics are an active area of scientific research, and questions remain about their long-term effects on human health.
For us, the practical response is simple:
Most conventional synthetic fibres begin with fossil resources.
Polyester, for example, is generally produced from petrochemical feedstocks.
Natural fibres begin very differently.
Cotton grows on a plant.
Flax becomes linen.
Hemp grows as a crop.
Wool grows on sheep.
This does not mean natural-fibre production has no environmental impact. Agriculture requires land, water and energy, and different fibres have different environmental footprints.
The better question is not:

These words are often confused.
Describes what the fibre is.
Cotton, linen and wool are natural fibres.
Describes how certain agricultural fibres have been grown and certified.
Organic cotton, for example, is still cotton — but it has been grown under organic agricultural standards.
A manufactured polymer fibre such as polyester, nylon or acrylic.

Where organic cotton makes practical and economic sense, we use it.
Where quality conventional natural fibres allow us to make durable products available at better everyday prices, we believe that can also be a sensible choice.
Choosing cotton rather than polyester is a good starting point.
But it isn't the end of the story.
A textile may also involve:

Softeners
Wrinkle-resistant treatments
Antimicrobial treatments
Waterproof coatings
Flame retardants
Finishes and binders
Synthetic fillings
Laminated membranes
That is why we believe textile companies should tell customers more than the marketing name on the front of the packet.
If a mattress protector says “cotton”, for example, that doesn't necessarily mean the filling is cotton.
It may have a cotton outer fabric with polyester padding inside.
Ask:
What is the outer fabric?
What is the filling?
Are there synthetic coatings or membranes?
Where was it made?
What treatments have been applied?
The more transparent the information, the easier it becomes to make an informed choice.
Cotton is one of the world's most familiar natural fibres.
It is soft, absorbent, versatile and particularly well suited to bedding and towels.
Cotton can be woven in many different ways, which means two 100% cotton fabrics can feel completely different.
A crisp cotton percale sheet, soft sateen sheet, fluffy bath towel and lightweight cotton blanket may all begin with the same natural fibre.
Best for: sheets, quilt covers, towels, blankets, mattress protectors and lightweight bedding.
Organic cotton is cotton grown according to recognised organic agricultural requirements.
It offers the familiar properties of cotton while addressing aspects of how the crop is produced.
We particularly like organic cotton for products used close to the body, including:

But certification should always be described accurately.
“Organic”, “certified organic cotton” and “GOTS certified” do not necessarily mean the same thing.
Transparency matters.
Linen is made from fibres from the flax plant.
It has a distinctive relaxed texture and is valued for its cool feel, strength and ability to become softer and more beautiful with use.
Good linen is almost the opposite of disposable homewares.
Its character often improves with age.
Best for: sheets, quilt covers, table linen, clothing and relaxed home textiles.
Wool is one of nature's most remarkable insulating fibres.
It can hold air within its structure and manage moisture vapour, making it extremely useful for bedding.

High-quality down creates exceptional insulation for its weight, which is why it remains highly valued for quilts and pillows.
Where used, sourcing and animal welfare should be transparent.

*Natural-fibre textiles can still contain synthetic dyes, coatings, finishes or components, so the complete product matters — not simply the fibre name.
We prefer to be careful with this question.
There is growing research into human exposure to microplastics and chemicals associated with textiles, but science has not established that simply sleeping in polyester causes a particular illness.
We therefore don't believe brands should make exaggerated health claims.
What we can say is much simpler.
Synthetic fibres add plastic material to the home.
Synthetic textiles can release microplastic fibres.
Some textile manufacturing processes can involve chemical treatments and finishes.
If you would prefer to reduce unnecessary synthetics and choose simpler natural materials where practical, natural-fibre bedding is an obvious place to start.
You spend thousands of hours in bed every year.
Choosing what surrounds you while you sleep is a reasonable decision to make consciously.
No.
That would be too simplistic.
Every textile has an environmental footprint.
Cotton requires agricultural land and water.
Wool involves livestock.
Linen requires agricultural production and processing.
Synthetic fibres require raw materials and energy and can contribute persistent plastic pollution.
The environmental outcome also depends upon:
How the fibre was grown or produced
Processing
Dyeing
Transport
Product quality
How long the product lasts
How often it is washed
Whether it can be repaired or reused
What happens at the end of its life
This is why our philosophy is not simply:
Natural = good. Synthetic = bad.
It is:
You don't need to replace everything in your home overnight.
A more practical approach is to start with textiles that spend the most time against your body.
Choose cotton, organic cotton or linen rather than polyester-rich fabrics.
Look beyond the surface fabric and check the filling.
A cotton cover with polyester filling is still partly synthetic.
Look for natural fills such as wool, cotton or responsibly sourced down rather than polyester fibre fill.
Consider the cover as well as the filling.
Cotton naturally suits towels because of its absorbency.
Then work outward to blankets, throws and other home textiles as existing products eventually need replacing.
Natural fibres aren't a new invention.
They are materials people have slept in, worn and lived with for thousands of years.
What has changed is the extraordinary quantity of synthetic material now surrounding us.
We believe there is value in rediscovering the simple materials that work.
Cotton.
Linen.
Wool.
Down.
