7 Reasons to Love Linen

Linen - the Word Alone Exudes Style and Luxury!

We love the soft hues of these colours which pair so beautifully with one another and always with white!

The Beauty of Linen

One of the oldest fabrics in the world, it continues to exude sophisticated style and luxury.

But there are so many more reasons to love linen.

1. It’s totally natural

Created from fibres from the flax plant. The best source of flax is widely believed to be Belgium and France thanks to the region’s optimum growing conditions which include the damp ocean climate and rich soil, not to mention the wealth of experience of flax growers through the ages. Ecodownunder's linen bedding is spun from the finest French and Belgian linen fibres.

It’s natural. It's beautiful. But there are so many more reasons we love linen!

2. Durability and longevity

It’s rare to hear of linen sheets wearing out. In fact, in Europe, linen sheets were handed down through generations! The fibres of the flax plant from which linen is made, are typically longer and stronger than cotton fibres which is why it is such a durable fabric and can be washed over and over again without wearing out.

3. Improves with age

As it lasts so long it’s fortunate that it has a rare ability to improve with age!  In fact the more you use and wash it, the softer and more beautiful it becomes.  Linen sheets feel to some people, quite crisp to sleep in at first, but they always become softer with washing.

4. Thermoregulating properties

Linen has a remarkable ability to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer which is one of the reasons it’s so gorgeous to sleep in at any time of year. It’s also why on a hot day you might instinctively reach for the linen shirt in the wardrobe knowing that the air will flow through the fabric and wick away any perspiration from the summer day.  This is because as a natural fibre it’s able to breathe.

Regulating your body temperature at night is important to help you get a good night sleep, as moving from hot to cold to hot often causes a disturbed and restless night.  Linen helps to regulate your body temperature, helping to avoid these fluctuations which is why linen sheets are so good to sleep and can improve the quality of your sleep all year round.

5. Environmentally friendly

A major reason to love linen! It’s a renewable resource made from the flax plant which requires no irrigation thriving on rainfall alone and very little fertiliser or pesticide minimising the impact on other plants and wildlife around it.    And, as it’s made from 100% natural fibres, linen is biodegradable and compostable.  This means it can return to the earth after its useful life.

6. Hypoallergenic properties

We spend a third of our lives in bed so for those with sensitive skin and allergies, what you sleep in is all the more important.  Sleeping in linen can be beneficial as it has hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial properties.  It’s also believed to be resistant to fungus and dust mites.  For those with sensitivities, it can help to improve the quality of sleep.

7. Other health benefits

Linen has tiny breaks in the fabric which have a relaxing massaging effect and stimulates blood flow whilst you sleep!

We all know that sleep is important for our mental and physical health.   Sleeping in linen can help to improve the quality of your sleep and thereby help to improve your general well being.

3 Reasons people don’t buy linen!

1. First-timers – new to linen

They’ve never slept in linen before, so they don’t know just how good it is!  Once you’ve experienced the luxury of sleeping in linen sheets, you won’t want to sleep in anything else.

2. The cost

The cost of linen sheets and linen quilt covers may seem high at first glance and whilst they are more expensive than cotton sheets, they’re actually an excellent investment given their longevity.  Linen bedding really does last for years which makes it exceptionally good value!  It also makes a wonderful gift.  The perfect wedding present to give.

3.The wrinkles

We love the relaxed casual look of un-ironed linen.  For most people, it ‘s chic and part of the charm and it’s the best excuse not to iron your quilt cover!  If you like a wrinkle-free look, linen is actually easy to iron and adds a touch of simple elegance to any bedroom. We recommend line drying in fresh air and ironing when slightly damp.
